Prairie Poultry

The gray wolf is ancestor to all dogs. And while years of breeding has produced hundreds of ‘different looking wolves’, the internal workings of modern dogs and their wolf cousins remain unchanged, so it’s no surprise their dietary needs remain the same too.

Our award-winning Biologically Appropriate™ philosophy is simple: mirror the quantity, freshness and variety of meats that dogs are evolved to eat, while limiting the carbohydrates and synthetic ingredients that don’t belong in a dog’s natural diet.

Your dog is biologically adapted for a diet rich in meat. That’s why ACANA Prairie Poultry is loaded with 50% meat, including free-run chicken and turkey, and whole nest-laid eggs delivered fresh from regional farms.

Entirely free of the pea or potato protein concentrates common in today’s conventional dog foods, ACANA derives its rich protein content from premium animal ingredients (not plants), supporting lean muscle mass and nourishing your dog according to his evolutionary needs.

Compare to conventional dog foods which are typically low in meat protein and feature pea or potato protein concentrates.

Rich in protein and low in carbohydrates to match your dog’s natural diet, ACANA Wild Prairie is free of high glycemic grains (such as rice and corn) found in conventional dog foods.

Long associated with obesity and diabetes, high glycemic grains break down quickly, causing a rapid and large rise in your dog’s blood sugar.

Grain-free and low in carbohydrates, ACANA Wild Prairie causes your dog’s blood sugar to rise less over a longer period of time so her sensitivity to insulin is beneficially increased and fat storage is decreased to achieve peak conditioning.

We use fresh meats in their most natural and nourishing form. That’s why 1/3 of the meats in ACANA Prairie Poultry are fresh and 2/3 are dried, providing a concentrated, natural source of meat protein, supplying the essential nutrients and natural goodness that all dogs instinctively crave.

Compare to conventional dog foods which seldom contain authentically fresh meats.

Consider the variety in the natural diet: eggs today, a duck or goose tomorrow, fresh fish the next. Mother Nature provides a diversity of proteins and fats essential to the peak health of dogs.

Yet this variety is lost in conventional pet foods, which typically feature a single animal ingredient, such as chicken or lamb, that’s highly processed and seldom fresh.

That’s why ACANA features free-run chicken and turkey and whole nest-laid eggs from prairie farms, providing a rich and nourishing diversity of meat proteins and fats to promote peak health.

Compare to conventional dog foods which feature one or two meats and have long lists of synthetic additives.

In her infinite wisdom, Mother Nature matched the nutrients in whole prey animals to perfectly meet your dog’s needs. Muscle meat provides protein and fat; organs supply vitamins and minerals; bones and cartilage provide calcium and phosphorus.

ACANA features WholePrey™ ratios of meat, organs and cartilage that deliver nutrients naturally, in highly bioavailable form, all of which dramatically reduce the need to add synthetic vitamins or supplements to our foods.

Compare to conventional dog foods which supplement over 20 different amino acids, vitamins and minerals.

Your dog has no nutritional requirement for carbohydrate and his natural diet contains very few, if any carbohydrates. And while carbohydrates are widely recognized as a leading cause of obesity and diabetes, conventional dog foods often exceed 50% carbohydrate of total content.

That’s why ACANA limits total carbohydrate content and replaces fast carbohydrates such as rice, tapioca and potato with steel-cut oats — a healthy, low-glycaemic carbohydrate that enters the blood stream slowly, avoiding spikes in blood sugar and decreasing the potential for fat storage.

Compare to conventional dog foods which often exceed 50% carbohydrates, and feature high-glycaemic ingredients such as rice, potato or tapioca.

Prairie Poultry

Modern dogs are built like their ancestors and we believe they should eat like them too. In nature there are no food supplements, and dogs and wolves derive their nutritional needs by consuming whole prey animals; muscle meat provides protein; liver, kidney and tripe supply vitamins and minerals; bones and cartilage deliver calcium and phosphorus.

How do you know if your dog’s food is Biologically Appropriate™? It’s simple, just answer the three meat questions.

Entirely free of plant protein concentrates, ACANA Prairie Poultry is loaded with 50% meat — up to twice as much as most pet specialty dog foods.

1/3 of the meat in ACANA is FRESH, supplying essential nutrients in their most nourishing form, and 2/3 is dried to provide a strong and natural source of nourishing meat protein.

In nature there are no synthetic food supplements, and dogs and wolves derive their nutritional needs by consuming whole prey animals; muscle meat provides protein; liver, kidney and tripe supply vitamins and minerals; bones and cartilage deliver calcium and phosphorus.

They might look different, but your dog shares his anatomy with the grey wolf – which means he’s evolved as a carnivore and adapted for a diet rich in meat, protein, and fat.

Based on this biological fact, and to produce a nutritional analysis that mirrors the diet Mother Nature would provide for your dog, ACANA features rich nourishing proteins and fats, and limits unwanted carbohydrates.
